The Honest Take

KNOWN FOR:

America's best-selling truck for 45+ years. The F-150 that brought hybrid power (PowerBoost), on-board generator (Pro Power Onboard), and the 12-inch SYNC 4 screen.

Strengths

  • Best-in-class aftermarket - every lift kit and wheel exists for this truck
  • Aluminum body resists rust in any climate
  • Engine options for every budget: 2.7L, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid
  • Tremor trim is a real factory off-road package - 1" lift, 33" tires, locking diff
  • IFS handles 35s cleanly on a 2" leveling kit with no rub

Watch Out For

  • Cam phaser failure on early 5.0L V8s (2021) - listen for rattle on cold start
  • 3.5L EcoBoost timing chain stretch past 100K miles
  • Aluminum body repairs cost 2-3x more than steel-body trucks
  • SYNC 4 system has reliability issues with screen lockups
  • PowerBoost hybrid battery is expensive to replace out of warranty

Build Categories

Pick the direction you want to take this truck. Each section has wheel styles, colors, and specs that work for that build.

Daily+

Better than stock, daily-able, OEM+ aesthetic

For owners who want their truck to look noticeably upgraded without sacrificing ride quality, gas mileage, or daily usability. Stock-height suspension with cleaner aftermarket wheels and slightly more aggressive tires. The most common build in Texas because most owners drive their truck every day.

  • Wheel sizing: 18-20" diameter, +18 to +44 offset
  • Tire pairing: 33" effective (e.g. 285/65R18 or 285/55R20)
  • Suspension: Stock height OR mild leveling spacer

Wheel styles that work

Clean 5 to 7-spoke designs that mimic OEM aesthetic but with sharper edges and modern finishes. Avoid super-aggressive concave or beadlock-style wheels - they look out of place on a stock-height truck.

Color recommendations by truck color

  • Black truck: Bronze, machined, black, or red accent wheels
  • White truck: Anything works - gloss black, gunmetal, bronze, machined, chrome
  • Red truck: Black, grey, or machined finishes
  • Grey or Silver truck: Anything - most flexible truck color for wheel pairing
  • Blue truck: Machined, black, or grey - neutral wheels let the blue stand out

Lifted

Off-road presence, daily-able, no beadlocks

The most common "built" truck you see at Texas truck meets. 2" to 6" of lift with bigger wheels and tires. Looks aggressive, handles light off-road, still works as a daily driver. This is the build that started Texas truck culture.

  • Wheel sizing: 20x10 or 20x12, -12 to -25 offset
  • Tire pairing: 33x12.50 or 35x12.50 A/T or M/T
  • Suspension: Leveling kit (basic) or 4-6" lift kit (serious presence)

Wheel styles that work

Aggressive concave or mesh designs that fill the larger wheel wells visually. Stay away from skinny spoke designs - they look weak on a lifted truck.

Color recommendations by truck color

  • Black truck: Bronze, machined, black, or red accent wheels
  • White truck: Anything works - gloss black, gunmetal, bronze, machined, chrome
  • Red truck: Black, grey, or machined finishes
  • Grey or Silver truck: Anything - most flexible truck color for wheel pairing
  • Blue truck: Machined, black, or grey - neutral wheels let the blue stand out

Street & Show

Big wheels, deep dish, show-truck stance

The build for guys who want their truck to be the loudest one at the meet. 22" to 26" wheels, deep dish or aggressive concave, large offsets, low-profile tires that put the wheel barrel on display.

  • Wheel sizing: 22-26" diameter, -18 to -44 offset
  • Tire pairing: 305/45R22 or 295/35R24 - low profile for show stance
  • Suspension: Stock height or 2" level - too much lift kills the show stance

Wheel styles that work

Deep dish, aggressive concave, or directional designs that look like they belong on a show truck. The wheel itself is the centerpiece.

Color recommendations by truck color

  • Black truck: Bronze, machined, black, or red accent wheels
  • White truck: Anything works - gloss black, gunmetal, bronze, machined, chrome
  • Red truck: Black, grey, or machined finishes
  • Grey or Silver truck: Anything - most flexible truck color for wheel pairing
  • Blue truck: Machined, black, or grey - neutral wheels let the blue stand out

Off-Road Performance

Beadlock-ready, smaller diameter, serious capability

The build for guys who actually take their truck off-pavement. Smaller diameter wheels (17"-18"), 8.5"-9" wide, conservative offsets, beadlock or beadlock-style wheels, aggressive M/T or hybrid tires.

  • Wheel sizing: 17x8.5 or 18x9, -6 to -12 offset (beadlocks available)
  • Tire pairing: 35x12.50 M/T or hybrid (KO3, Wildpeak, Toyo R/T Trail)
  • Suspension: Quality shock set or factory off-road suspension

Wheel styles that work

Simple spoke patterns, thick construction, beadlock-capable. Avoid anything thin or pretty - it gets destroyed off-road.

Color recommendations by truck color

  • Black truck: Bronze, machined, black, or red accent wheels
  • White truck: Anything works - gloss black, gunmetal, bronze, machined, chrome
  • Red truck: Black, grey, or machined finishes
  • Grey or Silver truck: Anything - most flexible truck color for wheel pairing
  • Blue truck: Machined, black, or grey - neutral wheels let the blue stand out

Lowered

Dropped stance, street performance, sport truck

Drop kits and bagged setups for street-leaning trucks. 2" to 7" drop kits with 22" or 24" wheels and mid-positive offsets. Less common on some trucks than others.

  • Wheel sizing: 22x9 or 24x10, +18 to +30 offset
  • Tire pairing: 305/40R22 or 305/35R24 - performance street tires
  • Suspension: Drop kit (Belltech, McGaughy's, DJM) or air-bagged setup

Wheel styles that work

Street-performance wheel designs - directional, mesh, or split-spoke patterns. Show truck designs work for static drops too.

Color recommendations by truck color

  • Black truck: Bronze, machined, black, or red accent wheels
  • White truck: Anything works - gloss black, gunmetal, bronze, machined, chrome
  • Red truck: Black, grey, or machined finishes
  • Grey or Silver truck: Anything - most flexible truck color for wheel pairing
  • Blue truck: Machined, black, or grey - neutral wheels let the blue stand out

Upgrade Warnings

Common upgrades that affect other parts. Plan for these before you spend.

If you upgrade: Going to 35" tires with 3.31 or 3.55 axle gears

Risk: Stock gears were calibrated for 32" tires. Going to 35s makes gears effectively 10% taller - slower acceleration, transmission hunting, 2-3 MPG drop, and more transmission heat.

What to do: Re-gear to 4.10 or 4.30 ($1,500-2,500 installed) OR tune the truck ($400). 3.73 axle trucks (FX4/Tremor) can usually skip re-gear for 33s.

If you upgrade: 6"+ lift kit

Risk: IFS with CV axles - over 4" lift creates severe CV joint angles. CVs bind, click, fail within 10K miles. Front diff oil doesn't lubricate at that angle.

What to do: Install front differential drop bracket kit ($250-400). Quality kits include this. Plan for $4-6K total spend on a proper 6" lift.

If you upgrade: Aggressive offset (-25 or more negative)

Risk: Lane keep assist sensors near wheel wells get interfered with. Wheel poke beyond 25mm is illegal in some states. Stones chip rocker panels. Wheel bearings wear faster.

What to do: Add fender flares ($300-1,000), mud flaps, trim inner liners. Stay at -25 max for daily-driven trucks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tires fit a 2021-2025 Ford F-150?

Stock is 275/65R18 or 275/55R20 depending on trim. With a 2" leveling kit you fit 33x12.50. 4" lift opens up 35x12.50. 6" big lift fits 37s with fender flares. Most popular F-150 build in Texas: 33x12.50 on a 2" level.

What is the bolt pattern on a 2021-2025 Ford F-150?

6x135mm with 87mm center bore. Same pattern as every F-150 since 2004 - wheels are cross-compatible with 2004-2025 F-150s. Lightning (electric) has same bolt pattern but different center bore.

Which leveling kit is best?

ReadyLIFT 2.25" SST ($350 installed) for daily use. Bilstein 5100 set ($700) for off-road use. Avoid cheap spacer-only kits if running 35s - they wear ball joints faster.

Will 35s rub on a stock F-150?

Yes - 35s rub at full lock and on hard bumps on stock-height F-150. You need minimum a 2" leveling kit. For no-trim 35x12.50, a 4" lift is required.
